Learn More About Angel Investing at DBA’s Inaugural Workshop and Pitch Event

Dorset Business Angels (DBA) will host its inaugural Angel Investing Workshop on April 17th, at the Bournemouth Carlton Hotel. The workshop will take place prior to the Spring pitch event and will be led by experienced angel investor and DBA Chairman, Don McQueen.

The workshop will be fully interactive and engaging; sharing real-life experiences discussing Due Diligence and what happens when it comes to an ongoing relationship with the entrepreneur. It’s expected that the ‘gold nuggets’ will come from a Q&A panel where experienced investors, DBA Directors and our professional service sponsors will impart their breadth of knowledge and share with participants the good, the bad and the ugly of their past experiences.

After the workshop attendees will join other guests for the Dragon’s Den style pitch event and investors’ dinner. 5 entrepreneurs have been carefully selected to pitch to investors who have signed up for the event.

April’s event will see the following pitches from entrepreneurs based across the South of England; two of them from our local area.

First up, a Bournemouth-based company in the automotive sector launching a new end-to-end digital marketplace that allows consumers to arrange finance, buy a car and sell their old one entirely online.

Next, a company from Exeter solving some of the issues of charging your electric vehicle at home, by facilitating the rental of domestic EV charge points with neighbouring motorists on a regular, bookable, and affordable basis.

The third company to pitch at the Monday evening event is an innovative company whose wearable technology benefits people with dementia, learning disabilities or traumatic brain injuries living in residential or nursing care or in the community. Smart Socks help to detect unobserved/uncommunicated distress in people living with these kinds of conditions.

The fourth entrepreneur to pitch is a company whose manual-handling injury reduction tech, encompassing wearable sensors that can be attached to workwear together with software, provides real-time alerts to enable injury prevention.

Last up, a Christchurch-based company has developed a sun protection product that delivers maximum protection for endurance sports enthusiasts, adventurers and professional athletes who have to deal with altitude, snow, and relentless seawater environments.

Don McQueen says, “April 17th is set to be a great day, kicking off with the workshop enabling participants to take their fresh knowledge and understanding with them into the live pitch event.”

DBA Director and Event Manager Debbie Frith comments, “We’re excited by the energy the newest members have brought to DBA. Their involvement in the workshop and the event afterwards is sure to make it a most vibrant and interesting event.”

DBA was formed in 2013 and provides quality, private equity investment opportunities to local high net worth (HNW) and sophisticated investors (SI). Any investments are in the form of an equity investment and not a debtor’s loan. Investments are made across all sectors.

Angel investment might come from a single investor, or it could be 2 or 3 Angels pooling funds together to support a company as a syndicate.

DBA is sponsored by Saffery Champness Accountants, Ellis Jones Solicitors and Investec. To book on to the pitch event visit the website www.dorsetbusinessangels.co.uk/events

Our Pitch Events

There are four pitch events per year, in 2024 they will be held in February, May, September and November. Hosted at a Bournemouth hotel or virtually via Zoom.

At each pitch event, there will be 5 business presentation pitches of 10-15 minutes, to suit all investor appetites. These will be selected by the Dorset Business Angels directors nearer to the event. Short summaries will be posted to our Events page and distributed via our newsletter ahead of the event. Each pitch includes a Q&A session and is followed by an investor debate, held privately.

These pitches and our other social events are ideal opportunities for networking and learning about what is new and trending in a variety of industries. If you would like to be involved you can find out more on our Investors Membership page.
